Why So Serious?

During my time in college, I have noticed a somewhat upsetting trend. People take everything a little too seriously. Before I go on, I just want to clarify that I'm not saying this about all people, but just as a general observation I have noticed overtime. With that said, people desperately need to learn to just chill out and relax sometimes. A lot of college students just seem to be a little more tightly wound than others. It might have something to do with college being the time in our lives where we are supposed to discover our true passions and pave the road for our entire futures..... Okay, so I admit that college is an important and stressful time in our lives, but treating every little thing as a life or death situation is not going make it any more enjoyable and rewarding. Now I don't want to be hypocritical. I too have fallen prey to this ailment. I've had times of worry, anxiety, and seriousness to rival most stringent of students, but I have never once felt like I have benefited from them. During spring break, I experienced one of these sudden transformations from a happy go lucky college student into a sullen middle aged man. For some reason, the middle aged man part of me was trying to convince the college student part that my spring break should be spent studying and getting ahead in my classes rather than relaxing and spending time with friends and family. The sad part is the middle aged man part was winning. If it wasn't for a valiant effort from some of my friends, my spring break very well could of consisted of me sitting inside with my head buried in a book and I am eternally grateful to them that it didn't. Instead I spent my time with them and with my family doing fun things a college student should do over spring break. Not only did I have a kick-ass time, but I came back to school with a refreshed mind, ready to dive back into the tough part of school. So my point is this: college does require us to be serious and to take the influence this time has over our futures seriously. But in order to do this and stay somewhat sane at the same time, we also have to learn to relax and take a break sometimes. I was lucky and learned this lesson the easy way.

  1. Great post. I appreciate your candor and insights. But don't let that middle-aged man win too often. You should't feel such stress. I know so many things seem so serious in college, but in the long run they really aren't. Take each day as a splendid gift.

  2. You are so right! I am prone to getting anxious and overwhelmed by my classes. However, I don't want to look back on this time in my life and remember it as the worst part of my life. Having fun is so important! Is it really going to change my life that much if I go have fun with my friends one night instead of studying? I don't think so. Sometimes you gotta life YOLO (though I really don't like this saying it applies well here).

  3. This blog is so true and completely relatable. I 100% get caught up in the "middle aged man" {or shall I say woman} identity. I often stress about schoolwork and grades because I feel like I am in a constant competition with everyone around me. Yet, college should not be that way. College is a time of adventures and explorations, not a time to feel downtrodden by your own failures and jealous of others' successes. Thanks for providing me with a fresh perspective and outlook on life. I think we all need to relax more because college life is fleeting and before we know it, we will be looking back at these years, wishing we could go back.

  5. Hate to say it, but this is me in a nutshell. One thing about school that I noticed is that it doesn't stop for anyone. TCU is extremely fast passed and if you get behind slightly, it can make a huge impact on grades. I do agree, stress doesn't help happiness but I do believe that sometimes it can make you study and work more efficiently.
Happiness is so important, we will never have this kind of experience again so we should embrace it. However, it's hard to think like that as I drowned in my assignments.

  6. I think any college student can relate to this blog post. It is often too easy to let stress consume us and keep us from being college twenty something year olds. I'm glad you were able to take a break from the studying during spring break and enjoy it, allowing you to come back to TCU refreshed. This blog post also reminds me of something I am constantly being told by friends: whenever you're stressed, really think about whether or not you will even remember what you were so stressed about next year... Most likely not.
